Neil Mellor has underlined why Liverpool midfielder Lucas Leiva will have a huge role to play in Sunday’s League Cup final.

The Reds will face Manchester City in the Capital One Cup showpiece at Wembley as the Merseyside outfit look to win the competition for a record ninth time.

Lucas missed Liverpool’s League Cup final triumph in 2012 due to a serious knee injury as the Reds beat Cardiff City on penalties.

However, former Liverpool striker Mellor is hoping Lucas will feature in Sunday’s final, adding that the Brazil international will have a vital role to play against David Silva.

“I hope Lucas Leiva gets a chance to start against Manchester City on Sunday,” Mellor told Liverpool Echo.

“I just feel he can do an important job for us in front of the back four with his experience and know how – and that Jurgen Klopp might prefer him to Emre Can, tough as it would be on the young German to miss out.

“If David Silva is given a central role, I think Lucas may be a better bet to help quell that threat. But we’ll see.”

Liverpool are in ninth place and nine points behind Manuel Pellegrini’s side, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.

The Reds have already beaten the Citizens in the Premier League this season after a 4-1 victory at the Etihad Stadium.
