Nigel Winterburn pinpoints positive signs for Man United

Nigel Winterburn has his say on Manchester United's improved performance against Stoke City

Nigel Winterburn believes that Manchester United can take plenty of encouragement from their 3-0 win over Stoke City at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils returned to winning ways in the Premier League with a much more convincing display than their recent outings in front of their home fans.

Goals from Jesse Lingard, Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney wrapped up the three points for Louis van Gaal’s men and left them five points adrift of the top four heading into the final 14 games of the season.

Former Arsenal defender Winterburn feels that there were plenty of encouraging signs for the Red Devils against the Potters, especially the speed of their attacks.

Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Wednesday morning, Winterburn said: “It was a lot better from them.

“The signs that I really liked from them were at times when they had the ball deep, they broke a lot quicker, they moved the ball a lot quicker. They had players several times running at the Stoke defence and trying to go beyond.

“At times when it gets slow for Man United is when they play in front of the defence.”

United, who are fifth in the table, now turn their attentions to their crunch Premier League clash with defending champions Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
