Olivier Giroud reacts to Arsenal transfer talk

Olivier Giroud says talk of Arsenal signing a new striker was a source of motivation for him

Olivier Giroud has insisted that the speculation suggesting Arsenal could be in the market for a new striker has only served as a source of motivation for the French forward.

Giroud has been a regular fixture in the north London side’s first team this season and has scored 12 goals and made four assists to help Arsene Wenger’s men to within two points of leaders Leicester City heading into the final 12 games of the season.

There was plenty of speculation that Arsenal were keen to sign a new forward over the summer months, with the likes of Gonzalo Higuain and Karim Benzema both touted as potential targets for the north London club.

However, Giroud has insisted that the transfer talk only served as a source of motivation for him to step his game up for the Gunners.

Giroud told Arsenal’s website: Obviously it helps to motivate you because when you are in your comfort zone, I think you maybe don’t give your best.

“So it helps sometimes to have speculation like that, to prove that you deserve your place in the team.

“It’s part of the job. In every single transfer period, there is some other striker’s name coming out as a possible new signing. You have to deal with that and keep focused on the team and to help the team try to win every single game.

“You have to give your best and that’s what I tried to do. I’m pleased with my first half of the season so far.”
