Paul Merson pinpoints what Arsenal are lacking ahead of Bournemouth trip

Paul Merson discusses Arsenal's failings in front of goal in recent weeks ahead of Sunday's trip to Bournemouth

Paul Merson believes that Arsenal are lacking a “killer instinct” in front of goal as the Gunners look to return to winning ways at Bournemouth.

The north London side have struggled to finish their chances in recent weeks and were held to a frustrating goalless draw by Southampton at The Emirates on Tuesday night.

Arsene Wenger’s side have failed to score in their last three Premier League games and have dropped down into fourth place in the table following their recent slump in form.

Former Arsenal man Merson feels that the north London side should have splashed the cash on a proven striker during the January transfer window and admits that he is concerned about their current form.

Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “Arsenal have gone from winning the league to hanging on for a top four place.

“They haven’t got that killer instinct, that someone who will just whack the ball in the back of the net. It’s always got to be the perfect goal.

“They need a ruthless finisher and they should have bought one in the window. They’ve gone three games without scoring!

“They’re looking over their shoulders now at Manchester United – and if Tottenham go on and win the league that would just sum it up.”

He continued: “Arsenal have the money. They could buy almost anyone in the world. If you bid £70m for Robert Lewandowski, do you think they’d turn it down?

“If Olivier Giroud gets injured, who’s playing up front? This is their best chance to win the league. Chelsea won’t be this bad next season. Liverpool and United will only get better.”

Arsenal, who finished third and won the FA Cup last season, have not lifted the Premier League trophy since their famous unbeaten triumph in 2003-04.
