Paul Merson states his prediction for Chelsea v Man City

Paul Merson reckons Chelsea can secure a morale-boosting win over Manchester City in the FA Cup

Paul Merson believes Chelsea can capitalise on a weakened Manchester City side and book their place in the FA Cup sixth round on Sunday.

The defending Premier League champions host Manuel Pellegrini’s side at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup fifth round.

It will be close, but I think Chelsea will edge it

Guus Hiddink’s side lost 2-1 to Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital on Tuesday night in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.

City don’t start their knockout stage campaign in Europe’s premier club competition until next Wednesday when the Citizens travel to Ukraine.

Former Arsenal and England midfielder Merson reckons Pellegrini will rest some of his key players ahead of their European tie which will allow Chelsea to edge to victory.

“This is the pick of the fixtures,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“This is Chelsea’s only chance of silverware – top-four is gone and I wouldn’t have thought they can win the Champions League.

“Manchester City have lost two games on the trot, big games, too. When was the last time when they lost three games in a row?

“Manuel Pellegrini said he’s likely to make changes for this game as they have to travel to Kiev in midweek, but that was before they lost two matches in a row.

“It will be close, but I think Chelsea will edge it.”

Chelsea are in 12th place and 14 points behind the Eastlands outfit, who occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.
