Paul Merson states his prediction for Shrewsbury Town v Man United
Paul Merson believes Man United can avoid a FA Cup fifth-round upset at Shrewsburg Town on Monday night
Paul Merson believes Manchester United will avoid a FA Cup upset at Shrewsbury Town on Monday night.
The Red Devils lost 2-1 to Danish champions Midtjylland on Thursday night in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie.
The cream always comes to the top
The 20-time English champions are winless in their last two outings after a 2-1 defeat by Premier League strugglers Sunderland at the Stadium of Light last weekend.
Louis van Gaal’s side have already beaten Sheffield United and Derby County in the FA Cup this year.
Former Arsenal and England midfielder Merson is confident that United can secure victory over their League One opponents despite Wayne Rooney’s recent injury blow.
“This will be a hard, hard, game for Manchester United, especially with no Wayne Rooney.
“His absence worries me. This is a proper FA Cup tie – Shrewsbury will make it that way. They’ll need to mix it up.
“Anthony Martial and some of the other young kids, won’t know what day it is going to Shrewsbury. They’ve got a very tough trip to FC Midtjylland on Thursday in a competition which is their only chance of qualifying for the Champions League.
“However, the cream always comes to the top. I know they had a bad result at Sunderland, but United have been playing alright recently.
“The advantage United have is that this game won’t be at Gay Meadow. Shrewsbury’s new ground, New Meadow, is a nice stadium. I’ve been there – it’s a nice place to play football. That’s why you don’t get too many big shocks anymore. The pitch will be good – as will the facilities.”
Only Arsenal have won the FA Cup more than United’s 11 times.
The Red Devils are in fifth place in the Premier League table and six points behind fourth-placed Manchester City.
United host Midtjylland in the second leg of their Europa League knockout-stage clash at Old Trafford next Thursday.
