Per Mertesacker sends warning to Man United ahead of Arsenal clash
Per Mertesacker looks ahead to Arsenal's Premier League showdown with Manchester United on Sunday afternoon
Per Mertesacker has warned Manchester United that Arsenal will be determined to return to winning ways when they take on the Red Devils at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
Mertesacker played the full 90 minutes as Arsenal slumped to a disappointing 2-0 defeat by Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night.
Arsenal now turn their attentions back to the Premier League, with Arsene Wenger’s men currently third in the table and three points behind the leaders heading into the final 12 games of the season.
The north London side secured a 2-1 victory over Leicester City in their most recent top-flight outing to be installed as the favourites to win the title this season.
And Arsenal captain Mertesacker is keen to help Arsene Wenger’s men return to winning ways and underline their title credentials at Old Trafford.
Mertesacker told Arsenal’s website after Tuesday’s loss: “We will go to Manchester United and we are in a good position – we don’t want to give that up. We have a great chance to focus back on the Premier League and forget what happened in the last 20 minutes [against Barcelona].
“Leicester City was a good game to make us believe we are still in it. You need to have little successes on the road. We go step by step, nothing else. We have a great chance on Sunday to do that again and show that we can compete for the title.
“It helps we beat United last year in the cup. I think that was a great experience for us and it is still in our heads sometime when you think about big games and Old Trafford. It is going to be an interesting game so let’s not forget the positives from Barcelona and go there and give our best with the same effort.”
