Phil Thompson delivers scathing assessment of Man United situation

Phil Thompson believes that Manchester United are looking "silly" due to their handling of Louis van Gaal

Phil Thompson has warned Manchester United’s board that they are set to be left looking “silly” if they choose to sack Louis van Gaal in the coming weeks.

The Dutchman’s future has been a relentless source of speculation in recent weeks following his side’s poor form across all competitions.

Van Gaal watched his side lose to Sunderland last weekend before seeing them slump to a Europa League defeat by FC Midtjylland on Thursday night.

The United board appear to be standing by their manager despite the mounting pressure following the club’s stuttering form.

The Red Devils have failed to produce consistent performances all season and are currently fifth in the Premier League, six points adrift of the top four heading into the final 12 games of the campaign.

And former Liverpool man Thompson is not impressed by the way the situation has been handled by United.

Thompson said on Sky Sports News HQ: “Van Gaal says ‘Ed Woodward, Sir Alex Ferguson and the owners have given me complete backing’. He’s putting them in a corner.

“He’s letting everybody know that these guys are behind him. If they turn around and put the knife in and you’re gone, it’s making everybody look foolish.

“They’re still in a good position for fourth place but these two cup games are massive. If they then leave it and make the decision [to sack van Gaal] after the cup games, or the Premier League games, they’ll look even sillier.”
