Wayne Rooney has taken to social media to wish Nemanja Vidic a happy retirement.

The former Manchester United defender announced last week that he would be hanging up his playing boots for good at the age of 34.

Vidic played for United for eight years from January 2006 to May 2014, helping the club to win five Premier League titles, three League Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup.

Rooney and Vidic were regular fixtures in the Red Devils first team under Sir Alex Ferguson – and the England captain was quick to send the retiring defender a heartfelt message on Instagram on Thursday afternoon.

Rooney shared the picture above on his personal Instagram account and wrote:

Rooney and his United team-mates are currently gearing up for their Premier League clash with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday afternoon.
