Ray Wilkins: The sneaky trick that could help Arsenal beat Barcelona
Ray Wilkins has some advice for the Arsenal ground staff...
Ray Wilkins has told Arsene Wenger to order the Arsenal ground staff to let the Emirates Stadium grass grow and not water the pitch before Tuesday’s crunch clash with Barcelona.
The north London side are preparing to welcome the Spanish giants to their home ground in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
Arsenal head into the game as the underdogs agains the La Liga champions, with Barcelona tipped by many to be the favourites to win the Champions League this season.
Former Chelsea coach Wilkins feels that Arsenal will need to do all that they can to stop the La Liga side, and believes that altering the playing surface could help slow down Barcelona’s game.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Monday morning, Wilkins said: “I personally would leave the grass as long as it’s possible to leave it.
“I know this is Arsenal we’re talking about, but just to slow them [Barcelona] down a touch, so they can’t move that ball as quickly.
“Don’t put any water on the pitch before kick-off, leave it as long as you possibly can and make it a little bit more difficult for them.”
Arsenal, who are bidding to reach the Champions League quarter-finals for the first time since 2010, were held to a frustrating home draw by Hull City in the FA Cup fifth round on Saturday.
