Ray Wilkins: This man has been Arsenal’s best player by a mile
Ray Wilkins has been impressed by Mesut Ozil's improved form for Arsenal this season
Ray Wilkins has heaped praise on Mesut Ozil for the improvement the Arsenal playmaker has shown this season.
The Germany international has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season to help Arsenal challenge for the top flight title.
The 27-year-old has already notched up 16 assists for his team-mates this season and has netted four times to help Arsene Wenger’s men up to third place in the table heading into Sunday’s showdown with leaders Leicester City at Emirates Stadium.
Ozil had struggled to produce consistent form for Arsenal following his arrival at the north London club from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013.
And former Chelsea coach Wilkins feels that the World Cup winner has now fully adapted to the rigours of the Premier League.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Wednesday morning, Wilkins said: “I think he’s finally come to terms with what the Premier League is all about.
“He played well in seasons gone by up until Christmas, then his performances fell away.
“As a creative midfielder this year, he’s been the best in the country by an absolute mile.
“Some of his passing, with the disguise that he puts on the ball, has been quite incredible.
“He’s scored four goals and should score more. But his whole work ethic has changed this year. For me, he’s their most important player this year. He’s been absolutely outstanding.”
Ozil scored Arsenal’s opener as the Gunners beat Bournemouth 2-0 at the Vitality Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
