Rio Ferdinand sends message to ‘helpless’ Arsenal after Barcelona loss

Rio Ferdinand says he can empathise with the Arsenal players after 2-0 loss to Barcelona on Tuesday night

Rio Ferdinand says he can sympathise with the Arsenal players after Tuesday night’s 2-0 loss to Barcelona at the Emirates Stadium.

The Gunners were able to keep Europe’s most-prolific side at bay for 71 minutes before Lionel Messi completed a brilliant counter-attacking move, which involved Neymar and Luis Suarez.

Arsene Wenger brought on Mathieu Flamini for Francis Coquelin with eight minutes remaining to add fresh legs to his waning Arsenal side at the Emirates Stadium.

However, the French midfielder brought down Messi in the penalty area within 60 seconds of his introduction and the Argentina international dispatched his penalty to secure a 2-0 victory in the first leg of the last-16 tie.

Ferdinand lost to Barcelona in two Champions League finals in 2009 and 2011, although the Red Devils did beat the Catalan side en route to winning their third European Cup in 2008.

And as a result, Ferdinand was able to empathise with Arsenal’s players and supporters following Tuesday night’s result.

The Gunners face Ferdinand’s former employers Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
