Robbie Savage slams ‘pathetic’ Juan Mata after Man United defeat
Robbie Savage criticises Juan Mata's defending for Midtjylland's winner in Man United's latest defeat
Robbie Savage has criticised Juan Mata’s “pathetic” defending for Midtjylland’s winner on Thursday.
The Red Devils slumped to a 2-1 loss to the Danish champions in the first leg of their Europa League last-32 tie.
The Premier League side had taken a first-half lead thanks to Memphis Depay’s 37th-minute opener but Midtjylland were level before half-time.
And Paul Onuachu scored a winner with 13 minutes remaining in Denmark after some poor defending from Mata, who was substituted shortly after Midtjylland’s winner.
Writing in his Daily Mirror column, Savage blasted Mata and the United player for failing to perform under manager Louis van Gaal.
“I’ve always liked Juan Mata, but his ‘defending’ for the winner was pathetic — the sort of abject dereliction which makes you think Mourinho may have had a point when he got rid of him at Chelsea,” Savage said.
“Whatever you may think of Van Gaal, some of United’s players need to take a good look at themselves in the mirror.”
The former Chelsea playmaker has scored four goals and has made three assists in 27 Premier League games for the Red Devils so far this season.
The 20-time English champions make the trip to League One side Shrewsbury Town in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night.
