Thierry Henry reveals text message to Arsenal legend after Lionel Messi penalty
Thierry Henry could not help but poke fun at Robert Pires...
Thierry Henry has revealed that he sent a text to Robert Pires to poke fun at his former team-mate after the pair’s failed penalty attempt against Manchester City in 2005.
Pires and Henry famously failed to score a spot-kick at Highbury after they had planned to pass the ball to each other rather than shoot directly from the spot.
The failed attempt has made the headlines once again in recent days after Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez combined to score in style after a similar penalty routine.
And Henry revealed that he got in touch with his former team-mate as soon as he saw the Barcelona stars successfully convert their effort.
Henry wrote in his column for The Sun: “I loved it when Barcelona scored THAT penalty against Celta Vigo — and texted Robert Pires with the message: ‘Messi didn’t get nervous, unlike someone I know’.
“People have suggested what Leo did was disrespectful to his opponents. But there is nothing wrong with using a cheeky bit of skill to entertain the crowd.
“In fact, it should be encouraged. Don’t be a robot, afraid to try anything a bit different.”
Arsenal are currently preparing to host Barcelona in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 clash at The Emirates on Tuesday night.
The Gunners were held to a goalless draw by Hull City in the FA Cup on Saturday.
