The Red Devils drew level before the break when Anthony Martial fired into the bottom left corner from close range.

However, the Black Cats secured the three points when Lamine Kone’s header bounced in off De Gea’s back in the 82nd minute.

The result left United fifth in the Premier League table and six points behind Manchester City, but the gap to the top four could be as much as nine points after this weekend’s round of fixtures.

The lunchtime kick-off inevitably prompted plenty of activity on Twitter – and here are some of our favourite updates from after the final whistle.
