Alan Shearer hits out at Arsenal star after Tottenham draw
Alan Shearer was not impressed by what he saw from Francis Coquelin on Saturday...
Alan Shearer has criticised Francis Coquelin after the midfielder was sent off during Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham on Saturday.
With the Gunners leading 1-0 thanks to Aaron Ramsey’s opener at White Hart Lane, the French midfielder was given his marching orders early in the second half after being shown a second yellow card for bringing down Harry Kane.
Spurs then scored twice in quick succession to take the lead in north London, but Arsenal spared Coquelin’s blushes thanks to Alexis Sanchez’s late goal to earn a point.
Coquelin has already issued a public apology for his reckless challenge.
And former England striker Shearer was less than impressed by the midfielder’s decision making.
Speaking on Match of the Day, Shearer said: “Arsenal very much frustrated Tottenham like West Ham did in midweek,” Shearer said on MOTD.
“Then this (Coquelin’s red card) happens.
“I mean it’s a stupid challenge, what on earth is he doing? Harry Kane is going absolutely nowhere there, he’s on the touchline, then the game changes.
“Arsenal were comfortable from set pieces until that point.
“Having said all that I’ve got to give credit to Arsenal for the way that they battled back and a draw really didn’t suit either team.”
