The Brazilian defender has been a regular fixture in the north London side’s first team this season, making 14 Premier League appearances and scoring one goal for the Gunners.
Speaking after Arsenal’s 3-2 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford, Wenger suggested that Gabriel’s lack of understanding the English language could be affecting his ability to communicate on the pitch.
Wenger said: “I would prefer him to have better English because in the fraction of a second sometimes someone can help you and communicate better.”
However, the centre-half has insisted that he has no problem communicating with his team-mates as Arsenal prepare for their FA Cup trip to Hull on Tuesday night.
Gabriel is quoted as saying by IBT: “I already understand my team-mates on the pitch. I still miss some things but I am improving.”
Arsenal head into their FA Cup fifth-round replay at Hull looking to return to winning ways after their 2-2 draw at Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday left them eight points adrift of leaders Leicester City.
