Paul Merson states his prediction for Arsenal v Watford
Paul Merson looks ahead to Arsenal's FA Cup quarter-final clash with Watford on Sunday
Paul Merson is backing Arsenal to cruise into the FA Cup semi-finals by beating Watford 2-0 at Emirates Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The Gunners booked their place in the last eight of the competition by beating Hull 4-0 in their replay on Tuesday night thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott.
The north London side, who were held to a 2-2 draw by Tottenham in the Premier League last weekend, are bidding to win the FA Cup for the third season running.
And former Arsenal man Merson is not expecting the Hornets to cause Arsene Wenger’s men many problems in north London on Sunday.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Merson said: “Watford have hit a bit of a brick wall. They have done brilliantly this season, but it’s just started to catch up with them. They’re struggling to score goals and to win football matches.
“This is a massive game for Arsenal. For me, this is their meaningful chance of silverware because I would be shocked if they won the league from here.
“They are going to get absolutely rinsed in the Champions League, but my worry is Arsene Wenger could rest players for the Watford game and take his strongest team to Barcelona. It would not surprise me one bit, but this is a big game for Arsenal.”
Arsenal are currently third in the Premier League table and three points behind second-placed Tottenham.
The Gunners travel to Barcelona for the return leg of their Champions League last 16 clash on Wednesday night as they bid to overturn a 2-0 deficit.
