Arsene Wenger has challenged his Arsenal players to use the recent criticism aimed their way as a motivational tool as they bid to get their Premier League title bid back on track.

Graeme Souness was one of the north London side’s loudest critics after Arsenal slumped to a disappointing 3-2 defeat by Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.

The Scot described the Gunners as bordering on a “joke” and said he would “stand on his head” if Arsenal go on to win the title this season.

Wenger is currently preparing his side for their home clash with Swansea City in the Premier League on Wednesday night.

And the Arsenal boss has urged his team to focus on improving their performances by using the recent criticism of his side as a source of motivation.

Speaking at a news conference at Arsenal’s London Colney training ground on Tuesday morning, Wenger said: “I’m never surprised by the criticism that comes, that’s part of the media today.

“It’s always a bit excessive and emotional but we have to deal with that and I don’t complain.”

Asked specifically about Souness’ comments, he continued: “Look, I don’t want to respond to individual criticism because I think people are a bit too emotional and we want to put that into perceptive and analyse things a bit more in a neutral way. I believe that this club is respected all over the world, despite what people say.

And when asked if Arsenal would use that kind of criticism as a motivational tool, Wenger replied: “Yes, that’s what we want to do, transform the negatives into positives and create even more solidarity.

“Let’s not go overboard, we are not playing not to be relegated, we play to fight for the Premier League league and that’s why we have to put criticism in the right place.”

Arsenal are currently third in the table and five points behind leaders Leicester.
