Mark Lawrenson states his prediction for Aston Villa v Tottenham
Mark Lawrenson looks ahead to Tottenham's Premier League trip to Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon
Mark Lawrenson is backing Tottenham to get their Premier League title bid back on track by beating Aston Villa 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Spurs head into the game on the back of their disappointing 3-0 loss at the hands of Borussia Dortmund in the Europa League on Thursday night.
The Lilywhites were frustrated as they squandered the lead against 10-man Arsenal at White Hart Lane last weekend in the 2-2 north London derby draw.
Tottenham are currently second in the Premier League table and five points behind leaders Leicester heading into this weekend’s round of fixtures.
And despite their recent stutter in form, former Liverpool man Lawrenson is expecting to see the Lilywhites return to winning ways against the Villains at Villa Park.
Writing in his column for BBC Sport, Lawrenson said: “As soon as Aston Villa conceded their first goal against Manchester City last weekend, they were finished.
“I was at Eithad Stadium for that game and the worst thing about it for me was that Villa only started to play a bit when they were 4-0 down.
“I feel a bit sorry for Villa boss Remi Garde, because this is not his team – he was not able or allowed to buy a player in January. They are going down, and it is not even with a whimper.
“Tottenham were given a bit of a reminder of how tough the Premier League can be by 10-man Arsenal last time out, but this is the perfect fixture for them to get back to winning ways.”
Tottenham, who finished fifth in the league last season, lost 1-0 to West Ham United before their draw with Arsenal last weekend.
