The former Red Devils captain was part of the United side that recovered from a 2-0 away defeat at Barcelona to win 3-0 at Old Trafford in the 1983/84 European Cup Winners’ Cup quarter-finals.
Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge gave the home side a first-half lead last Thursday before Roberto Firmino put Jurgen Klopp’s side in a commanding position in the Europa League tie.
However, Robson has called upon the current United squad to emulate the 1984 side and create another memorable European night at Old Trafford.
“It would be our greatest win over Liverpool if we could do it — and we did it against Barcelona, so it shows it is doable,” Robson is quoted as saying by the Daily Mirror.
“For me, that was the best atmosphere inside Old Trafford I’ve witnessed.
“It was a great night to come back against a top team like Barcelona and beat them 3-0.”
Liverpool kept a fourth successive clean sheet in the first leg – one more in the second leg and they will match Napoli’s Europa League record for successive games without conceding.
The Reds – along with AC Sparta Praha, SS Lazio and round of 32 entrants FC Shakhtar Donetsk – are the only surviving sides yet to lose in this season’s UEFA Europa League proper. The Reds have drawn five of their nine games since matchday one, more than any other side in the competition.
