Charlie Nicholas backs Tottenham star to win big award
Charlie Nicholas says Dele Alli should be crowned PFA young player of the year this season
Charlie Nicholas believes that Dele Alli should be crowned PFA young player of the year following his brilliant form for Tottenham this season.
The 19-year-old has been one of the Premier League’s standout performers this season and has scored seven goals in the top flight, notching up six assists for his team-mates.
He has also notched up two assists in the Europa League to help Mauricio Pochettino’s men book their place in the last 16 against Borussia Dortmund.
And former Arsenal man Nicholas is convinced that Alli is the right man to win the young player of the year award this season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Nicholas said: “Dele Alli by a mile. I’ve never agreed with the age bracket, with 23-year-old players able to win it. I’d say they should have to have been 21 at the start of the season.
“Regardless of that it’s Alli by a mile. I’d be amazed if anybody else won it. Lukaku will be in the frame if you’re talking 23 maximum and John Stones for the first six months of his season.
“However, Everton’s league position plays a part, with Spurs in the title race and Alli also doing the business in Europe and for England.”
Tottenham are currently preparing for their Europa League clash in Dortmund before they turn their attentions towards their Premier League trip to Aston Villa on Sunday.
Spurs are currently second in the Premier League table and five points adrift of leaders Leicester City.
