Mark Lawrenson states bold prediction for Chelsea v Stoke
Mark Lawrenson believes Chelsea could still make a late charge for the Premier League title
Mark Lawrenson has joked that Chelsea probably still retain their top-flight crown given the inconsistency of the Premier League title race.
The Blues are in tenth place in the Premier League table but only eight points behind fourth-placed Manchester City in the race to secure a spot in next season’s Champions League.
Guus Hiddink is unbeaten in domestic competitions since the Dutch replaced Jose Mourinho at Stamford Bridge in December.
The former PSV Eindhoven manager preserved that record with a 2-1 win against Norwich City at Carrow Road on Tuesday night.
Former Republic of Ireland defender Lawrenson doesn’t envisage Stoke bringing Hiddink’s unbeaten run to an end at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.
“Chelsea are making a late run – the way the Premier League is going, they are probably not out of the title race,” Lawrenson told BBC Sport.
“Seriously, though, we should not be surprised by their good form. We know they have some great players because they won the title last season and interim manager Guus Hiddink has got them all playing well.
“Stoke are up to seventh place after winning three games in a row, but I see that run ending on Saturday.”
Chelsea are 18 points behind leaders Leicester with 30 points to play for in the Premier League campaign.
The Blues host Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 clash at Stamford Bridge next week.
