Paul Merson states prediction for Crystal Palace v Liverpool
Paul Merson is backing Liverpool to secure a comfortable win against Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon
Paul Merson is backing top-four chasing Liverpool to secure a vital victory at Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Sunday.
The Reds gave their Champions League aspirations a timely boost on Wednesday night thanks to a resounding 3-0 victory over Manchester City.
Palace are on that glass slope with slippers on at the moment and they cannot stop sliding
Jurgen Klopp’s side made amends for their League Cup final disappointment with a brilliant performance as Adam Lallana, James Milner and Roberto Firmino all found the net at Anfield.
The 18-time English champions are only six points behind the Citizens, who are in fourth place and occupy the final Champions League qualifying spot.
Former Arsenal playmaker Merson reckons Klopp’s men should have enough to get past a Palace side that has lost four of their last six Premier League games.
“Palace are on that glass slope with slippers on at the moment and they cannot stop sliding, while Liverpool had a great result in midweek and now the race for the top four is wide open,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Liverpool will now be thinking ‘if we can put five wins together, we can finish in the top four’, so it becomes a big game.
“But they also have that Europa League game in midweek against Man United, so it depends how you balance things out. This is a really awkward time for these managers – what do you go for? Do you chase the teams above you in the league or do you go ‘right, if we can beat Man United…’?
Merson added: “But I am going to go 2-1 for Liverpool, as after the win against Man City I think they will be flying.”
Alan Pardew’s Eagles outfit haven’t won in the Premier League since a 2-1 victory at Stoke City on 19 December.
Liverpool failed to qualify for the Champions League last season.
