Emre Can reacts to Marouane Fellaini incident after Liverpool beat Man United
Liverpool midfielder Emre Can plays down altercation with Maroaune Fellaini during 2-0 win over Manchester United
Emre Can has played down his clash with Maroauen Fellaini in the dying moments of Liverpool’s 2-0 victory over Manchester United on Thursday night.
The Belgium international was booked in the second half for a reckless challenge on Liverpool right-back Nathaniel Clyne at Anfield.
Fellaini walked a disciplinary tightrope during the first leg of their Europa League last-16 clash after he tussled with Jordan Henderson and Adam Lallana.
However, the towering midfielder was fortunate to escape a straight red card after he appeared to elbow Can in added time.
But Germany international Can was quick to play down the severity of the incident ahead of the return leg at Old Trafford next Thursday.
“It was just a small fight. It was okay. It was not a boxing ring punch,” Can is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.
“Fellaini is a fair sportsman. He touched my throat with his elbow but it is okay.”
Liverpool broke the deadlock thanks to Daniel Sturridge’s first-half penalty after Memphis Depay brought Nathaniel Clyne.
The Reds extended their lead in the second through Roberto Firmino, who finished past David De Gea from close range at Anfield.
