Bastian Schweinsteiger looks set for another spell on the sidelines after Germany boss Joachim Low revealed that the midfielder has suffered a fresh knee ligament injury in training.

The World Cup winner has already missed a portion of the season with a knee problem and had only just returned to first-team action with Manchester United in recent weeks.

Now, the veteran midfielder appears to have suffered yet another injury setback in news that will come as a blow to Manchester United as the race for a top-four finish hots up.

Schweinsteiger has suffered a partial tear of the medial collateral ligament in his right knee.

Speaking at a news conference on Wednesday, Germany boss Low said: “It’s the medial ligament again.

“I am not able to give an exact time scale as to how long he will be out, but it doesn’t look very positive and it could be that there is a tear in the ligament.”

The news comes as Chelsea prepare for their international friendly clash against England in Berlin this weekend.
