Guus Hiddink explains Alexandre Pato omission in Chelsea v West Ham

Guus Hiddink explains his decision not to bring on Alexandre Pato during Chelsea's draw with West Ham

Guus Hiddink insists that he will give Alexandre Pato his first run-out in a Chelsea shirt on merit, after the striker was left on the bench for Saturday’s 2-2 draw with West Ham at Stamford Bridge.

The Brazilian striker is yet to make his first appearance for the west London club after joining the Blues on loan from Corinthians until the end of the season back in January.

Pato has been working on his fitness levels at Chelsea’s Cobham training ground in recent weeks but is yet to earn a place in the starting line-up.

Hiddink opted to start Loic Remy in the place of Diego Costa for Saturday’s game.

And asked in his post-mach news conference if he considered bring on Pato, Hiddink replied: “When Costa is not there we have Remy, we also have Traore and Pato.

“They are competing for the second spot. I make my judgement on what we see.

“Loftus-Cheek is strong, can penetrate and he can play physically and technically well, which he showed. You have to make a choice on who to bring on.”

Chelsea – who are 10th in the table – are not in action again until their trip to struggling Aston Villa in the Premier League on Saturday 2 April, after the forthcoming international break.
