Jamie Carragher questions Arsenal ahead of Tottenham showdown

Jamie Carragher discusses Arsenal's slump in form ahead of Saturday's north London derby clash

Jamie Carragher believes that Arsenal are lacking leaders as they prepare for their crunch north London derby clash with Tottenham on Saturday lunchtime.

The Gunners have come in for plenty of criticism in recent days following their back to back Premier League losses to Manchester United and Swansea City.

Arsenal, who are looking to win their first Premier League title since the 2003-04 season, head into Saturday’s north London derby showdown at White Hart Lane desperately needing a win to boost their confidence levels.

However, former Liverpool defender Carragher feels that there are a number of issues behind Arsenal’s slump in form.

Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, Carragher said: “Where are all the leaders? After Arsenal suffered a costly defeat by Swansea, it was one of the first things their supporters asked.

“They want to know where to find this generation’s Tony Adams, the man who can drag them through a crisis, someone who will stand tall at the most difficult moment and carry the team over the line.

“It was clear, after Arsenal had lost ground in the title race, that they wanted some kind of reaction from manager Arsene Wenger, too.

“But what exactly? Wenger has not thrown tea cups or gone berserk on the touchline in the past 20 years so why would he start now?

“Lacking leaders, though, is not just Arsenal’s problem. It’s a problem for football in general.”

He added: “The blunt truth is, that type of player — those who can be demonstrative and aggressive — who we regard as being leaders, such as Adams and Keane, belong to a different era. Now it is a case of players doing it in a different way, leading by example with their performances.”

Arsenal head into Saturday’s game knowing that a win would put them level on points with Spurs heading into the last nine games of the season.

Tottenham, meanwhile, can pull six points clear of the local rivals with victory at White Hart Lane.
