Jamie Redknapp: This new Arsenal signing could make the difference
Jamie Redknapp was impressed by what he saw from Mohamed Elneny in Arsenal's draw at Tottenham
Jamie Redknapp has heaped praise on Mohamed Elneny after the midfielder’s impressive full Premier League debut in Saturday’s north London derby clash for Arsenal.
The Egypt international was handed his first Premier League start of the season in midfield and more than held his own against Spurs as the 10-man Gunners battled to earn a 2-2 draw at White Hart Lane after Francis Coquelin’s sending off.
Elneny is likely to feature for Arsenal during Tuesday’s FA Cup trip to Hull City, with Coquelin set to serve his one-game suspension after his red card in north London.
And former Liverpool midfielder Redknapp was impressed by what he saw from Elneny – who joined Arsenal from Basel in January – against the Lilywhites at White Hart Lane.
Writing in his column for the Daily Mail, Redknapp said: “There can’t be many harder games to make your first Premier League start than in a ferocious north London derby. But Mohamed Elneny did well for Arsenal on Saturday.
“It was interesting that Arsene Wenger started him alongside Francis Coquelin but they couldn’t go over to White Hart Lane and be completely open.
“Elneny gave his team a base and extra security in midfield. He wasn’t outstanding but he looked good on the ball and it’s in these kind of games where you really judge a player.
“Coquelin is banned now but Elneny looks ready to play for the rest of the season.”
Saturday’s draw left Arsenal third in the Premier League table and three points behind Spurs heading into the final nine games of the season.
