John Aldridge: Why I won’t criticise this Liverpool star
John Aldridge has his say on Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet
John Aldridge has defended Simon Mignolet after the goalkeeper was criticised for his performance in Liverpool’s League Cup final defeat.
The Belgium international was at fault for Fernandinho’s opener as the Manchester City midfielder managed to squeeze the ball between Mignolet’s legs from a tight angle.
Former Liverpool centre-half Carragher urged manager Jurgen Klopp to sell Mignolet in the summer after his latest high-profile mistake for the Merseyside outfit.
However, former Liverpool striker Aldridge felt Mignolet had a good performance against the Citizens aside from his mistake for Fernandinho’s goal.
“I know Simon Mignolet got a lot of criticism after the game, and I agree that he should have done better for the goal, but I’m not going to be too harsh on him,” Aldridge told Liverpool Echo.
“He made a great save in the first half, and plenty more after the mistake, which shows good character. He’ll be disappointed with the goal, but that was the only thing he did wrong.”
Mignolet signed a new five-and-a-half year deal with the Merseyside outfit in January despite speculation surrounding his long-term Liverpool future.
The Reds goalkeeper moved to the 18-time English champions in a £9m deal from Sunderland in the summer of 2013.
Liverpool have the chance to exact swift revenge on Manuel Pellegrini’s side on Wednesday night when the Reds host City at Anfield.
