Johnny Giles: Louis van Gaal must to blame for Man United flop Angel di Maria
Johnny Giles says Louis van Gaal left Angel di Maria confused at Manchester United
Louis van Gaal must accept the blame for Angel di Maria’s failed Manchester United career, according to Johnny Giles.
The Argentina international was one of Paris Saint-Germain’s standout players as the Ligue 1 holders were 2-1 winners against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.
Di Maria helped PSG to secure a 4-2 aggregate win and eliminate the Premier League holders from the Champions League.
The 28-year-old midfielder lasted one season at Old Trafford after his £57.1m move to United from Real Madrid in 2014 before the Red Devils sold Di Maria to PSG last summer.
Former United midfielder Giles felt that Di Maria was suffocated under Van Gaal’s management, prompting the winger to move to the French capital.
“You’d have to blame Van Gaal for Di Maria,” Giles told Newstalk.
“When Di Maria was playing for Manchester United, he mostly played on the left-hand side, I don’t think he knew where to go.
“Good players, you release them. They make the right choices. He got to them.”
He added: “He looked terrible at United. He looked confused. The only person who can confuse you in that way is the manager.”
United lost 2-0 to Liverpool in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 clash at Anfield on Thursday night.
The Red Devils will host West Ham United in the FA Cup quarter-final at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
