Jonjo Shelvey: This Liverpool star one of football’s nicest guys
Martin Skrtel may look like a hard man but the Liverpool defender is a nice guy, according to Jonjo Shelvey
Martin Skrtel may have a reputation as a hard-nosed defender, but Jonjo Shelvey has revealed that the Slovakian is one of the nicest guys in football.
The Newcastle United midfielder played with the 31-year-old centre-half during his three-year stay at Liverpool before the England youngster joined Swansea City in 2013.
Shelvey has played with the likes of World Cup winner Pepe Reina, Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard and Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney during his career so far.
But the 23-year-old hailed Skrtel as a great character to have in the dressing room as he included the Slovakia international in his #One2Eleven on The Fantasy Football Club.
“He looks like the hard man but really he’s one of the nicest men you’ll meet off the pitch,” Shelvey told Sky Sports.
“He’s another great character in the dressing room. He’d be one of the first to turn up for training and he’d always be in the gym working his socks off. He’s a great central defender, who defends with his life.”
Skrtel is currently recovering from a knee injury which he picked up during Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat by Watford in the Premier League in December.
The Liverpool defender made his return for the club’s Under-21 side on Friday night in a 1-1 draw with Manchester United.
