Klopp delivers latest Liverpool injury update ahead of Palace clash

Jurgen Klopp reveals Lucas Leiva is sidelined with a quad injury but confirms Mamadou Sakho is fit for Liverpool

Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that Lucas Leiva will be sideliened for “five or six weeks” following the Liverpool midfielder’s quad injury.

The Brazil international picked up an injury during Liverpool’s League Cup final defeat by Manchester City at Wembley last weekend.

[It’s a] quad – I don’t know exactly but five or six weeks [out], not too good

Lucas was carrying an injury when the 29-year-old stood up to take a penalty in the shootout but his effort was saved.

The midfielder has been deputising at centre-half for Liverpool in recent weeks and has excelled for Klopp’s side.

Speaking at his pre-match media conference at Melwood training ground on Friday afternoon ahead of Sunday’s trip to Palace, Klopp delivered an update on the South American midfielder.

“Lucas is really unfortunate. It’s a little bit more serious,” Klopp said.

“I’ve never heard about an injury you get like this, from a penalty, but it was only because he was a little bit injured before.

“He didn’t feel too much but after the shot it was done. [It’s a] quad – I don’t know exactly but five or six weeks [out], not too good.”

Former Paris Saint-Germain defender Mamadou Sakho trained with his Liverpool team-mates on Sunday after he was forced off during Sunday’s final at Wembley.

However, Klopp revealed that Sakho, who picked up a serious knee injury during a 2-1 loss to Palace at Anfield last November, would be fit for Sunday’s game.

“Mama did a little bit today for the first time, but we didn’t really do a lot because it was the second day after a game,” Sakho added.

“The only session we have is tomorrow and we have to see how he is then, but today was the first day he did a little bit more.

“[And] Daniel Sturridge trained completely normally yesterday.”
