Manuel Pellegrini’s side emerged triumphant at Wembley after a 3-1 victory over the Reds in a dramatic penalty shootout.
This is a bigger game for City because Man Utd’s win over Arsenal has put severe pressure on them finishing fourth
Philippe Coutinho’s late goal cancelled out Fernandinho’s opener before the Brazilian, his compatriot Lucas Leiva and Adam Lallana missed their spot-kicks in the shootout.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will have the chance to exact swift revenge on the Eastlands outfit when Pellegrini’s side travel to Anfield in the Premier League on Wednesday night.
However, Merson is tipping the Anfield clash to finish in a 1-1 stalemate, mirroring the scoreline at the end of 90 minutes at Wembley on Sunday.
“I was speaking to Phil Thompson on Saturday and we thought whoever won the cup final would probably lose this game. Now I’m not so sure,” Merson told Sky Sports.
“Liverpool will be so devastated at the manner of the defeat at Wembley and this is a bigger game for City because Man Utd’s win over Arsenal has put severe pressure on them finishing fourth.
“This is a game for the mind and the fitness of the players – Sunday will have taken more out of the losing team than the winning team – and I see another close one.”
Liverpool were 4-1 winners against the Citizens at the Etihad Stadium in November after Eliaquim Mangala’s own goal and efforts from Coutinho, Roberto Firmino and Martin Skrtel.
The Reds are in ninth place and nine points behind fourth-placed City.
