Johnny Giles says it is impossible to call Sunday’s Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium.

Manchester United were dealt a blow in their hopes of reaching the Champions League next season after the Red Devils crashed out of the Europa League on Thursday night.

Philippe Coutinho’s brilliant goal cancelled out Anthony Martial’s opener as United drew 1-1 with Liverpool, which saw the Reds progress to the quarter-finals 3-1 on aggregate.

The Citizens, meanwhile, played out a disappointing goalless draw with Dynamo Kyiv mid-week just days after a 0-0 stalemate with Norwich City in their last Premier League outing.

City are four points ahead of sixth-placed United in the race for a top-four finish as both Manchester clubs limp towards the season’s conclusion.

Speaking on Irish radio station Newstalk, Giles delivered his assessment ahead of Sunday’s Manchester derby.

“They are both so inconsistent,” Giles said.

Enhanced odds: Get 5/1 on Man City to beat Man Utd

“City started the season so well and looked like they would run away with it but they’ve totally imploded. I wouldn’t put a lot of money on one team or the other.”
