John Aldridge states his prediction for Man United v Liverpool
John Aldridge looks ahead to Liverpool's Europa League clash with Manchester United on Thursday night
John Aldridge has told Liverpool that they should play “without fear” when they take on Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Europa League on Thursday night.
The Merseyside outfit head into the game looking to build on their impressive 2-0 win over the Red Devils at Anfield last week.
Liverpool have had a free weekend to prepare for the game as they bid to book their place in the quarter-finals of Europe’s second tier club competition.
Manchester United, meanwhile, had to battle back from a goal down to earn a 1-1 draw against West Ham and force a replay in their FA Cup quarter-final clash.
Former Liverpool man Aldridge feels that the Reds are on the cusp of securing their place in the last eight and says that a goal for Jurgen Klopp’s men at Old Trafford would all but secure their progress.
Writing in his column for the Daily Post, Aldridge said: “The message from Jurgen Klopp to his Liverpool players on Thursday night should be: “Play with no fear.”
“We’re in a great position to progress to the quarter-finals of the Europa League but there’s still a lot of work to be done against Manchester United.
“Our recent record at Old Trafford is poor. We have lost eight of our last nine matches there. But this Liverpool side should have taken great encouragement from how we outplayed United at Anfield last week.
“There is nothing to be scared of. We’ve beaten United once and we can do it again. We have to go there, roll our sleeves up and be strong, both physically and mentally.
“A 2-0 lead is very useful but we can’t afford to sit back and try to hold on to what we’ve got. That would be asking for trouble.
“We need to be on the front foot and looking to cause them problems. If we score then that kills the tie and United will be aware of that.”
