Martin Keown responds to Arsenal’s critics after Tottenham draw
Martin Keown believes Arsenal responded to their criticis who says the Gunners lack characters and leaders
Martin Keown has praised Arsenal’s desire during Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane.
Arsenal edged into a first-half lead in Saturday’s north London derby after Aaron Ramsey netted a brilliant opener at White Hart Lane.
There was real desire to get back into the game
However, Francis Coquelin was dismissed for a second bookable offence early in the second half to hand Tottenham the initiative.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side appeared to be heading for victory after Toby Alderweireld and Harry Kane scored for Spurs inside seven minutes of Coquelin’s dismissal.
But Chile international Alexis Sanchez levelled with a close-range finish to secure a valuable point in the Premier League title race.
Former Arsenal defender Keown felt Wenger’s players silenced critics who claim the Gunners lack characters and leadership after battling back from 2-1 down with 10 men to secure a point in the derby.
“People saying where are the leaders and where is the spirit? But there was real desire to get back into the game – and quality to go with it,” Keown told Match of the Day.
“Arsene Wenger wants them to play football. Arsenal will feel that they should have gone on to win the game.”
Arsenal are in third place in the Premier League table and eight points behind leaders Leicester City.
