Martin Keown says he has been really impressed with Eric Dier’s effortless transformation from centre-half into defensive midfielder.

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has been using Dier in a holding role since the start of the season with good success.

He’s made a quick transition from defence to midfield — particularly when you consider how comfortable he looks in the role at international level

The former Sporting Lisbon youngster started his career at a centre-half but Dier has blossomed alongside fellow England star Dele Alli.

The 21-year-old produced another competent performance on Saturday evening as Dier managed to tame Mesut Ozil and Marcus Reus in England’s 3-2 victory over Germany in their international friendly in Berlin.

Writing in his Daily Mail column, former Arsenal centre-half Keown explained why Dier’s move to midfielder has proved so successful.

“He has mobility, pace, technical ability and good composure, and Pochettino has made him believe he’s a midfielder,” Keown told Daily Mail.

“One thing he does which really impresses me is let the ball run across his body on to his back foot, which opens up the pitch for him. This gives him the time he needs to pick out a good forward pass, rather than get rid of it quickly to the nearest team-mate.”

Keown added: “He also provides a lot of extra power in the air at set-pieces — at both ends of the pitch. His winning header was excellent, and he put in a few important clearances when England were defending corners.

“He’s made a quick transition from defence to midfield — particularly when you consider how comfortable he looks in the role at international level.”

Tottenham star Dier has scored three goals and has made one assist in 30 Premier League appearances so far this season.
