Matt Holland: What Mauricio Pochettino should be telling Tottenham squad

Matt Holland addresses Tottenham Hotspur's 3-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund on Thursday night

Matt Holland says Mauricio Pochettino should tell his Tottenham Hotspur squad to forget about their Europa League disappointment and focus on the Premier League.

Spurs suffered a chastening 3-0 loss to Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their Europa League last-16 tie in Germany on Thursday night.

Pochettino started a second string side as goals from Patrick-Emerick Aubayemang and Marcus Reus’s brace sealed a comfortable win.

Tottenham make the trip to the Premier League’s basement club Aston Villa in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon as Spurs look to close the gap on leaders Leicester City.

Former Charlton Athletic and Republic of Ireland midfielder Holland explained why Spurs shouldn’t be too downbeat about their Europa League humiliation.

“It will be interesting to see how Spurs get on in the return leg but if I was Pochettino I’d be telling my squad to remember where they are in the Premier League and not to get too downbeat about what happened in Dortmund,” Holland told Marathon Bet.

“As for Arsenal against Barcelona next week, the tie looks almost done but there’s no way I’d send a second team to Spain. I’d send out the strongest 11 while there’s still a chance because if you get beat heavily the damage done to confidence could be very, very harsh.”

Tottenham are in second place in the Premier League table and five points behind leaders Leicester, who face Newcastle United at St James’s Park on Monday night after the Magpies appointed Rafael Benitez on Friday.
