Pat Nevin: Arsenal aren’t the only team without great character

Pat Nevin says there isn't a team in the Premier League that can match the character of Arsene Wenger's last title-winning side

Pat Nevin says Arsenal aren’t the only side lacking big characters in their squad in the Premier League.

The Gunners have been criticised in recent weeks after Arsene Wenger’s side faltered in the title race.

The north London side have failed to win their last three Premier League games following defeats by Manchester United and Swansea City plus Saturday’s stalemate with Tottenham Hotspur.

Former Liverpool captain Graeme Souness and Manchester United legend Paul Scholes have been particularly outspoken about the lack of leaders in the Arsenal squad.

But Nevin says it is unfair to compare Arsenal to great Gunners side under Wenger which had the likes of Patrick Vieira in their squad.

“If you can compare it to other teams around the league, they’re not bad, they’re up the top of the league,” Nevin told Newstalk.

“If you compare them to the great Arsenal side with the likes of Vieira – they had amazing characters and personalities.

“But that’s weird in football. We remember them and we think it is really common.

“It isn’t. There are only a few teams. They stick in your mind because they’re special.

“They haven’t the character of that Arsenal team but who does have that character of the other teams in the league?”

Arsenal are in third place in the Premier League table and eight points behind leaders Leicester City.
