Pat Nevin: This Arsenal signing is a bit special
Former Chelsea midfielder Pat Nevin is a big fan of Arsenal midfielder Mohamed Elneny
Pat Nevin has hailed Arsenal signing Mohamed Elneny as a special player.
The Egypt international moved to Arsenal in a £6.7m deal from Swiss champions Basel in the January transfer window.
Elneny made his Premier League debut at White Hart Lane on Saturday afternoon as Arsenal rescued a 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur in the north London derby.
The 22-year-old racked up his first Gunners appearance last month in Arsenal’s goalless draw with Hull City in the FA Cup fifth round.
Former Chelsea midfielder Nevin witnessed Elneny’s debut at the Emirates Stadium in February, and the retired Scotland international is a big fan.
“The first 20 minutes I thought, you’ve got a player there. He’s a bit special,” Nevin told Newstalk.
“He roamed about the pitch and controlled the whole thing, then he completely ran out of gas in the second half.
“He couldn’t keep up. That’s fair enough.”
Nevin continued: “He can play, he can tackle and he is absolutely not lacking in confidence. We’ll enjoy watching him.”
Elneny scored nine times in 142 games in all competitions during a four-year stay at Basel.
Arsenal are in third place in the Premier League table after a 2-2 draw with Tottenham at White Hart Lane on Saturday afternoon.
The Gunners are eight points behind Premier League leaders Leicester City.
