Pat Nevin: Why this Tottenham star left me gob smacked
Pat Nevin says Christian Eriksen embodies Tottenham Hotspur's transformation under Mauricio Pochettino
Pat Nevin has admitted that Christian Eriksen left the Chelsea legend gob smacked after his performance in Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Swansea City.
The Denmark international has been a key part of Mauricio Pochettino’s side over the course of the 2015/16 season as Spurs aim to win their first Premier League title.
There is a new guy who is wearing his shirt and his face who is whole high energy
While Eriksen didn’t contribute a goal or an assist as Spurs came from behind to secure a 2-1 win against Swansea, former Chelsea midfielder Nevin was impressed by the Denmark international’s performance.
“Tottenham are quite high energy and tempo,” Nevin told Newstalk.
“It is not a normal Tottenham thing to do. It is almost epitmosed by one player. I adore Eriksen as a player.
“I’d watch him every day of the week. Quite often he would get taken off after 60-65 minutes. He strolls about and walks about.
“There is a new guy who is wearing his shirt and his face who is high energy. He is sprinting by every player in the team. I had no idea – and I suspect he didn’t either – that he is actually incredibly quick until this week.
“His chasing back was great, but the amount of times he was flying past people like Cork, Britton and Sigurdsson.
“If you can get Eriksen to buy into that way, the rest will.”
Nevin added that Eriksen has the potential to develop into a world-class player in the coming seasons.
“He left me gobsmacked,” Nevin added.
“He can become a world-class player now that he has got that on top as well.”
Eriksen has scored five goals and has made eight assists in in 24 Premier League appearances for Spurs so far this season.
The 25-year-old playmaker moved to Tottenham from Eredivisie side Ajax in a £11m deal in 2013.
Tottenham are in second place in the Premier League table and two points behind leaders Leicester City ahead of Wednesday night’s London derby against West Ham United at Upton Park.
