Phil Thompson reacts to Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Swansea City
Phil Thompson was not impressed by Arsenal's performance against Swansea...
Phil Thompson described Arsenal’s performance as “shocking” and “appalling” after the Gunners were beaten 2-1 by Swansea City at The Emirates on Wednesday night.
Arsene Wenger’s men headed into the game looking to return to winning ways after their defeat at Manchester United and took the lead through Joel Campbell in the first half.
However, Wayne Routledge soon pegged the home side back level, before Ashley Williams netted the winner late on in the second half.
The result dealt yet another blow to Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes, leaving them three points behind Tottenham and six behind Leicester heading into Saturday lunchtime’s crunch north London derby at White Hart Lane.
And former Liverpool man Thompson was less than impressed by what he saw from the Gunners at The Emirates on Wednesday night.
Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ after the game, Thompson said: “Was it as bad as the game at Old Trafford? Absolutely.
“They were alright in the first half – but only alright – and scored. They were dominating the game until, against the run of play, Routledge scored for Swansea. In the end, Swansea deserved this. Arsenal were poor.
“Do people go overboard about Arsenal? No they don’t. This was shocking.
“I can’t remember Fabianski making any sort of save in the second half. This is at home. This is at the Emirates. This them trying to go for the title.
“It was an absolutely appalling second-half performance.”
Arsenal have not won the Premier League title since 2004.
