Chelsea could struggle to attract world-class signings in the summer transfer window, according to Ray Wilkins.

The Blues suffered a humiliating 2-0 defeat by Everton on Saturday night as former Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku scored twice in the final 12 minutes to secure the Toffees’s progress to the last four of the FA Cup.

Chelsea have endured a tough week after Paris Saint-Germain eliminated the west London side from the Champions League after a 2-1 victory at Stamford Bridge in the second leg of their last-16 clash.

Guus Hiddink’s side are facing an uphill battle to secure a place in next season’s Champions League after fourth-placed Manchester City moved 11 points clear thanks to Saturday’s goalless draw with Norwich City.

Speaking to BT Sport on Sunday, former Chelsea midfielder Wilkins explained why the Blues could struggle to attract top names in the summer.

“Being out of the CL next year, you can’t bring in the players you want,” Wilkins said.

“We can all talk about next year but they won’t get the pick of the pile.

“They have to go for lesser players or else Roman Abramovich will have to pay a lot of money so they’ll leave their current clubs and not play Champions League next season.”
