Rob Jones: This Liverpool defender reminds me of Gary Neville

Rob Jones likens Nathaniel Clyne to the Manchester United legend

Rob Jones has likened Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne to Manchester United legend Gary Neville.

The former Liverpool defender rivalled Neville for the right-back spot in the England national team before his career was cruelly cut short by a persistent knee problem.

Clyne has followed in steps of Jones and has established himself as Liverpool’s first-choice right-back following his summer move from Southampton.

The former Crystal Palace defender is also vying for the full-back spot on the right side of Roy Hodgson’s England defence ahead of next summer’s European championship.

Retired England and Liverpool defender Jones explained why he is a big fan of Clyne after he impressed in Thursday’s 2-0 win against United in the Europa League.

“Nathaniel Clyne has been steady. He does solid things. He is like Gary Neville. He does the right things,” Jones told The Sport Review.

Clyne played a part in Liverpool’s breakthrough goal at Anfield after Memphis Depay brought down the Reds defender.

Daniel Sturridge dispatched his effort from the penalty spot before Roberto Firmino wrapped up three points in the second half.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher echoed Jones’s sentiments after he praised Clyne’s consistency for Jurgen Klopp’s side.
