Thierry Henry has admitted that he felt sorry for Marcus Rashford as he looked like one of the few Manchester United players to be giving his all against Liverpool on Thursday night.

The 18-year-old striker has been a regular fixture in the United first-team in recent weeks following injuries to the likes of Wayne Rooney.

Rashford started the game and played the full 90 minutes of the 1-1 Europa League draw at Old Trafford as United were knocked out of the competition by Liverpool after a 3-1 aggregate defeat.

Former Arsenal striker Henry feels that some Manchester United players do not understand what it means to represent the Red Devils.

And the ex-Gunners captain said that he was impressed by teenager Rashford’s performance on an otherwise disappointing night for Louis van Gaal’s men.

Speaking on Sky Sports News HQ on Friday morning, Henry said: “Yesterday I’m watching the game and there is one guy that looked like he had the desire and understood that it was a Man United v Liverpool game – Rashford.

“Rashford had the desire yesterday. He was running up until the end of the game, putting pressure with five minutes to go and still trying to bomb forward and get back.

“You could see that he understood what was at stake. I don’t know if some of the players understand what it is to represent Man United.

“You can have a go at Van Gaal sometimes. But the players also need to understand when you wear that shirt what’s happening with it – it [represents] success.”
