Tottenham star Jan Vertonghen sends message to Everton striker

Tottenham defender Jan Vertonghen sends a Twitter message to Everton's record breaker Romelu Lukaku

Jan Vertonghen and Romelu Lukaku may be Premier League rivals but the Tottenham Hotspur defender was delighted to see his compatriot set a new Everton record on Tuesday night.

The Belgium striker scored in Everton’s 3-1 victory over Aston Villa at Villa Park in the Premier League upon his return to Roberto Martinez’s starting line-up.

The former Chelsea striker’s 17th Premier League goal of the season broke an Everton record that had been in place since 1992.

Lukaku’s 17th goal of the league campaign was the most scored by an Everton place in a Premier League season, breaking a record shared by Tony Cottee and Andrei Kanchelskis.

And Tottenham defender Vertonghen, who is international team-mates with Lukaku, posted a Twitter message for the Everton forward.

Vertonghen and his Tottenham colleagues managed to prevent in-form Lukaku from scoring against Spurs in both their Premier League meetings in the 2015/16 season.
