Louis van Gaal singled out Timothy Fosu-Mensah for special praise after Manchester United continued their recent mini-resurgence with a 1-0 victory over Watford at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
The 18-year-old defender made his first start for United against the Hornets on Wednesday after coming off the bench against Arsenal at the weekend to make his first-team debut for the club.
Van Gaal has had to call on a number of United’s youngsters in recent games due to the club’s current injury woes.
And the Dutchman has admitted that he was thrilled by Fosu-Mensah’s display against the Hornets, as United secured a 1-0 win at Old Trafford thanks to Juan Mata’s second-half free-kick.
Speaking to United’s website after the game, Van Gaal said: “Timothy has saved us three times, I think, because of his speed.
“So I was very pleased that he was on the pitch. He wanted to be changed early in the second half [because he picked up a knock] but I let him stay on because he always closed the door for us.
“I think the youngsters have given us a lot of spirit and now, when you see the dressing room full of joy with all the players laughing, it’s beautiful to see.”
Wednesday’s win left the Red Devils level on points with fourth-placed Manchester City heading into the final 10 games of the season.
United travel to West Bromwich Albion in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
