Graeme Souness reacts to Man United’s 1-0 win over Everton
Graeme Souness has his say after Manchester United's battling 1-0 win over Everton at Old Trafford
Graeme Souness claimed that Manchester United are relying too heavily on their young players after their 1-0 win over Everton in the Premier League on Sunday.
After a goalless and uninspiring first half, Anthony Martial broke the deadlock in the 54th minute when he drilled home from close range after behind found by Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s low cross.
The Red Devils did not produce much entertainment for their fans at Old Trafford on Sunday but successfully ground out a result against the Toffees.
And former Liverpool man Souness feels that the Red Devils have become too heavily reliant on their young players.
Speaking on Sky Sports after the final whistle, Souness said: “Man United are relying on a 23-year-old Lingard, a 20-year-old Martial and an 18-year-old Rashford.
“This is Man United, one of the biggest football clubs in the world. And [the young players] are being asked time and time again to get them out of a hole and it’s difficult.
“But they’ve ground out a result. I think they would say in the dressing room right now, it isn’t really important how we’re playing right now, which is just as well, because it’s been like that for most of the season.”
The result left United in fifth place in the Premier League table and one point adrift of the top four heading into the final seven games of the season.
Next up for the Red Devils is a trip to White Hart Lane to take on Tottenham Hotspur next Sunday, before their FA Cup quarter-final replay against West Ham United.
