Alan Shearer: This Liverpool star looked awful v Swansea
Alan Shearer says Daniel Sturridge had an off day for Liverpool at Swansea City
Alan Shearer says Daniel Sturrige endured an off day on Sunday afternoon after Liverpool’s 3-1 defeat by Swansea City at the Liberty Stadium.
The England striker was a surprise omission for Liverpool’s 1-0 defeat by Villarreal in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final at Estadio El Madrigal last week.
Sturridge was restored to Jurgen Klopp’s line-up for the trip to South Wales but the 26-year-old failed to trouble the Swansea goal after an erratic performance.
Former Newcastle United forward Shearer didn’t hold back in his assessment of the former Chelsea and Manchester City striker.
“Klopp was looking for a reaction and he didn’t get the right one. Sturridge had an off day. His touch and distribution was poor,” Shearer told Match of the Day.
Adrian Lopez’s added-time finish earned Villarreal a 1-0 win in the home leg, which was the sides’ first competitive meeting.
Liverpool’s 33 Uefa games against Spanish opposition have ended W13 D10 L10 (W4 D6 L5 at Anfield – W7 D4 L5 in Spain).
The Reds are bidding to win Europe’s second-tier competition for the first time since 2001.
